[QUOTE=doormandean;22537...The metal filter seems rather excessive too, and I wondered if the slash cut end was meant to have the longest point at the top or the bottom.[/QUOTE]

I believe that the slash end is meant to have the longest point on the bottom. They are generally twistable. If it is stuck just heat the metal tenon with hot water or a heat gun for a little bit and you should be able to turn it in the direction you suggest. They can also be removed from the stem as I find them to be a bit of a pain in the neck. They smoke far better in my opinion with out the things.

except to say, that's a cool looking pipe.

Don't quote me, but I once heard the whole in the stem is similar to the Carey Magic Inch pipes...supposedly provides a cooler, drier smoke...

Not in this case. Also in the magic inch pipe there is a filter that sits over the tenon and allows outside air to be drawn through the stem it is not so much a hole.

Hi drdca. I have several Dr Plumb pipes and where the hole is on your pipe, you would normaly find a red plastic dot, part of the pipe logo. It may be that this has some how come out or someone has drilled it out. If you google dr plumb pictures you may see what I mean God Bless pete.

That "hole" in the stem is a "Carburator". But the one in yours is due to someone fiddling with it. It is not supposed to be in a Dr. Plumb. It should have brass encircling it if it is Manufactured that way. I have seem some in older Dr. Grabows, and several other Makes, but never have I seen it in a DR. Plumb.
