    Which snob is worse?

The only thing worse than a pipe snob is a tobacco snob, and neither one is a joy to hang out with.

You know the pipe snob. He is Mr. Stiff Upper Lip when it comes to the idea of smoking a cob. “I dare say,” Mr. Stiff Upper Lip says, “I have heard that some hillbillies coax a fine smoke out of Missouri Meerschaum, but I wouldn’t dream of smoking out of any pipe worth less than $500.00, even if it only only costs me a hundred-twenty bucks on e-bay.”

Mr. Stiff Upper Lip holds his meer in a gloved hand. “When I was at the Chicago Pipe Show, I dare say that I didn’t see one civilized smoker smoking a cob.” Mr. Stiff Upper Lip sees no evil, hears no evil, and smokes no good. He can’t see the Falcon for the briar.

The tobacco snob is a similar breed. He is the kind of Johnny-go-numbly who sees you packing Prince Albert and says, “Glad someone finally let him out of the can!” He smells an aromatic room note and he says, “It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Madam.” He gives out pouches of Mixture 79 as gag gifts at Christmas. He guffaws at the dog on the Granger tin. “That dog is pointing me to the good stuff over there,” he laughs.

What does the tobacco snob smoke? Something that you have never heard of before, that you can’t buy around here, that needs to be cellared and then air dried for ten minutes before it is rubbed out and packed in a five-step method that requires wooden matches with one false light and one charring light before the coup de plume is delivered. Needless to say, he has never sampled a bowl of Walnut or Sugar Barrel, no Sir Walter Raleigh, and no Velvet.

If you have it, smoke it, that is the jaunty pipe smoker’s motto. There is no pipe that doesn’t deserve a try. There is no tobacco that doesn’t deserve a sampling. Good taste is one thing. Snobbery is another. There is no such thing as a bad smoke. It’s like a good day of fishing.

Enjoy what "You" smoke, and smoke what "You" enjoy.......regardless of what anyone else thinks.

I fully agree. If the tobacco tastes good I smoke it, if whatever pipe smokes well I smoke it. No white gloves here. I gladly clean dirty old estate pipes, and make them gleam and am proud of everyone one of them. I buy what tobacco I can afford and it tastes great in my gleaming pipes.

Thanks for a morning chuckle (even if it is a sad truth)

I must say that the pipe snob is worse. The "tobacco snob" would give me Mixture 79, so he would be my best friend.......

Can't stand either one. To each their own and to hell with the snobs. Whether it be, pipes, baccy or just life in general.

    There's a fine line here.

To me the true qualification of a snob is someone who looks down on others because they like the "lesser" version of...whatever.

Now if someone really appreciates quality tobaccos or pipes, there's nothing wrong with that IMO.

Thanks Tree...that's me. I love "quality" tobaccos, but harbor no ill feelings towards those Neanderthals who smoke "that other stuff".......LOL LOL!
Seriously, my mantra is: Smoke what you like, like what you smoke!
