Whenever I smoke a pipe I get a smug, self-satisfied feeling. If the control freaks in our beloved gubment knew how wonderful pipe smoking is they would either tax it into oblivion or outright ban it.

I find that since smoking a pipe my stress level has dropped. Turn a bad day good, smoke a pipe, but not that shit from the hood.

You guys took the words right out of my mouth. I find that I only have maybe 2 cigs a day now opposed to 2 packs a day. That is huge from me. The pipe tobacco smells better, tastes better, and yes I find it very relaxing. Cigs I found were almost an unconscious act of lighting 1 up after an other. Pipe smoking I take time to think of which pipe, then which tobacco then gently packing her up and slowly dragging and actually savouring the taste. So much better then the so called cancer sticks.!!!! Ok, it's sexy too !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes for me it relaxes me like nothing else can, as a young teen, i had a bad temper so i went to a Boxing club to vent my aggression, and after doing that for 6yrs and also playing Rugby for 8yrs, i still could flip at anything but since smoking a pipe ive changed as a person, in that im so calm and take time now with what life throws at me, ill pick the pipe i want and a tobacco to suit my mood, and bingo all is clear of what i need to do, every man should smoke a pipe maybe the world would be a nicer place to live,

But I like smoking a pipe because I feel relaxed, and it looks better hanging from your teeth and lips than a chain of dip spit dribbling from your chin.

As a daily event, because of the down time..time to relax and reflect. But the big picture is the connection to some happier times in my youth. As many of the men in my family smoked a pipe, some not regularly but would around the fall, it always seemed that those family get together where folks were smiling and joking would have pipe smoke wafting around too! Captain Black and Apple with some SWR thrown in...

I've taken some time to think about my answer before replying to this thread. A lot of the answers that immediately come to mind have something to do with other people's perceptions of me and pipe smokers generally, but I don't seek anyone's approval or admiration for smoking a pipe, so those answers prove to be false. What I do know is that pipe smoking fits very well with my personality. I have always been pensive and introspective, and smoking a pipe gives me an opportunity to pursue deeper thoughts by focusing the lower functions of my brain on something that is enjoyable and capable of holding my interest. In some ways, meditation is a similar exercise, but I've never had the patience to sit still and chant "ommmm", so that doesn't really work for me.

I also think that pipe smoking is a truly gentlemanly (and gentlewomanly) art, something to be taken up when you have arrived at a certain level of civiization and intelligence and want to continue improving yourself. It makes you slow down a bit and - there it is again - think, which is always necessary to become a better person, in my opinion. While intelligence can be actively improved, wisdom is something that only comes from experience and which coalesces only upon reflection on that experience.

Aside from the deeper reasons I have for smoking pipes, there are the simple ones like the variety of available tobaccos, the relatively low cost compared with hobbies such as cigar smoking, and the camaraderie I feel in participating in forums with people such as yourselves. In fact, I think you guys and gals prove my theory pretty well, that pipe smoking facilitates becoming a better person, because there's really no other group I've met whose company I enjoy quite so thoroughly and uniformly.
