The part I found interesting, and have not tried, was packing a bowl and letting it sit for a few days then dumping it out unsmoked to 'sweeten' a pipe...

I particularly like step 3 under sick pipe: place tobacco in the bowl and let it set for a few days...I've actually done this

The ability to scan such ephemera at home is priceless.
I too was struck by the recommendation of a bowl of SWR to sweeten a "balky" pipe (-:
