Do You Have A Favorite (Summer) Olympic Event?
I am actually a little stunned this topic hasn't come up yet.
Other then gymnastics and volleyball, I tend to like the more obscure events (well maybe not obscure, but the least televised)...was never into the swimming events, and well...Greg Louganis and his head meeting board makes me cringe during the diving events.
Such as:
Kayaking / rowing
Equestrian
Handball
My cousin in AZ has a friend who is in the women's Pole Vaulting competition...so I'm hoping to maybe catch a glimpse to see if she's good enough to be televised.

I've looked at a little of this years so far. NBC's coverage leaves MUCH to be desired.
S'pose the gymnastics would be a favorite for me to watch.
Snus, Snuff and Briar, what more can a soul require?

I don't watch the opening or closing,
but I can't get enough of the games.

While I'm entranced by the gymnastics and swimming competitions, I also watch beach volleyball, diving, canoeing/kayaking, fencing and boxing.
I agree...the coverage sux.

I cannot argue the coverage sucks either!
I don't know about y'all, but they added another 2-3 channels to my cable package, just for the Olympics.
So I'm thinking "cool, maybe see some different stuff". Nope...if it wasn't for the fact that at one point in time some of the more obscure events were shown now and then, I would think that the Olympics only consisted of: Track & Field, Gymnastics, Basketball and swimming/diving events.

Those are televised more because they are the most popular events and attract the most viewers. MSNBC and CNBC are covering most of the least popular events. Right now they are covering Handball, Badminton, Judo, Water Polo, and Volley Ball on MSNBC. CNBC will be covering Boxing this afternoon.

I'm very fond of the Swedish Girls Olympic Bikini Team.

I know they're the most popular and it's all about driving in the most money (which is the reason the summer and winter were split), but what I am getting at is, if it wasn't for this day and age of 2 gazillion TV channels nobody would actually know there are something like 26 different sports during the summer Olympics.
But they're also popular because that's what gets jammed down peoples throats...we watch if the network execs loved horses, who knows, we all could be scratching our heads saying "swimming, when did swimming get into the olympics".
Interestingly enought...Archery has been the most popular event among watchers on cable networks...goes to show me, that some of these more obscure events would be more popular if they got more air time...d'oh.

The only Olympic event I watch is boxing. Maybe the Winter Olympics will bring more hockey, but I have to wait to see. Remember when Tug-o-War was an Olympic event? Seriously, it was!

What happened to baseball and softball in the summer games?
